Uncle Sam protecting his property against the encroachments of his cousin John

Uncle Sam protecting his property against the encroachments of his cousin John
Complete Explanation: Northern fears of European intervention in the Civil War on behalf of the South are manifest here. Uncle Sam, in the form of a bearded Union soldier (closely resembling Abraham Lincoln), unceremoniously routs John Bull from a fenced garden where the latter has been poaching. Grabbing him by the scruff of the neck, Sam warns, "John, You lost your Non-interfering Principle. I'll lay it on your back again." The American wields a large stick "Principle of Non Enterference." John Bull has a handful of cotton plants, more of which appear at right, and wears "Armstrong's Patent" cannon on his legs. (The term refers to a type of English-made gun used by the Confederates.) The artist has hidden several Negro faces in his drawings of cotton plants here. A cock with the head of French leader Napoleon III watches from his perch on the fence at left. At right stands a large scarecrow from whose arms hang the lifeless bodies of Confederate general P. G. T. Beauregard and Confederate president Jefferson Davis. A plaque on the scarecrow reads, "All Persons Tresspassing These Premisses, will be punished according to Law." (click image for source)

POETICAL WORKS: JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL (1891)

This blog is inspired by my grandfather's books from the 19th century. Within these books, are glimpses of a "fire in the spirit" that is all but lost in America today. The mettle/determination of a different era blazes throughout. The grotesque misinformation and disinformation that deluge our sources of knowledge today (the propaganda runs dark & deep), drove me to these 19th century texts. I was searching, desperately, for some unadulterated truths. I do think I found a few precious gems. Below, a few poems and excerpts from poems. The tragedies and injustices we witness today occurred in the past. The only difference is, today, few see. In the early days of the Republic, a disciplined and educated populace actively resisted despotism. This defiance to old world tyranny is readily identifiable in these poems. Dig the title, "crowned bloodsuckers". Do we see anything, even remotely, resembling such a ferocity of spirit today?
To John G. Palfrey ( LINK ) There are who triumph in a losing cause, Who can put on defeat, as 't were a wreath Unwithering in the adverse popular breath, Safe from the blasting demagogue's applause; 'Tis they who stand for freedom and God's laws. And so stands Palfrey now, as Marvell Stood, Loyal to Truth dethroned, nor could be wooed To trust the playful tiger's velvet paws: And if the second Charles brought in Decay Of ancient virtue, if it well might wring Souls that had broadened 'neath a noble day, To see a losel, marketable king Fearfully watering with his realm's best blood Cromwell's quenched bolts, that erst had cracked and flamed, Scaring, through all their depths of courtier mud, EUROPE"S CROWNED BLOODSUCKERS,___ how more ashamed Ought we to be, who see Corruptions flood Still rise o'er last years mark, to mine away Our brazen idol's feet of treacherous clay!
SUGGESTED BY THE GRAVES OF TWO ENGLISH SOLDIERS ON CONCORD BATTLE-GROUND. These men were brave enough, and true To the hired soldier's bull-dog creed; What brought them here they never knew, They fought as suits the English breed: They came three thousand miles, and died, To keep the PAST upon it's throne; Unheard, beyond the ocean tide, Their English mother made her moan.
Stanzas on Freedom MEN! whose boast it is that ye Come of fathers brave and free, if there breath on earth a slave,Are ye truly free and brave? If ye do not feel the chain,When it works a brother's pain,Are ye not base slaves indeed,Slaves unworthy to be freed? They are slaves who fear to speak For the fallen and the weak; They are slaves who will not choose Hatred, scoffing, and abuse,Rather than in silence shrink From the truth they needs must think; They are slaves who dare not be In the right with two or three.

The link ABOVE contains one of the Reverend Martin Luther King's most profound but most overlooked speeches. This speech, in all probability, got him assassinated. In it he deviated from civil rights to anti-war. This anti-war stanch upset the Military Industrial Complex.

(Of particular interest to me and relevance to this blog, is the inclusion of an excerpt from a James Russell Lowell poem that MLK so generously and warmly ended his powerful discourse with)

the Davis incident would hopefully now be put on a path toward resolution following a feeding frenzy in the Pakistani media, which has reported on rumors of an extensive network of CIA contract spies operating outside of the Pakistani government's or the ISI's knowledge.

Regardless, the gentlemen's agreement between the ISI and the CIA that the two organizations would keep each other informed on each other's actions in Pakistan has now broken down.

"It's a vicious circle. Davis was in Pakistan because Pakistan can't be trusted. But Davis getting caught has increased the mistrust," the Pakistani official said. "Their interests are no longer congruent. Eventually the ISI and the CIA will have to work out new rules of engagement."

In Lebanon, the Hariri tribunal finds itself on trial - CSMonitor.com

In Lebanon, the Hariri tribunal finds itself on trial - CSMonitor.com: "In Lebanon, the Hariri tribunal finds itself on trial"
Tribunal on trial! Hey Obama & Hillary, did you read this? Wake up! War crimes tribunal coming to a theatre near you!!
"... Yet under those criteria, the Lebanon tribunal comes up short. It is the only international tribunal organized for a single assassination. Its legal basis is an untested hybrid of international and Lebanese law. French scholar Jean-Baptiste Beauchard notes it is the first tribunal to prosecute "terrorism." This is "a crime which is neither a war crime, nor genocide, nor a crime against humanity, but an act of terrorism, and that is a legal problem. There is no definition in international law as to what 'terrorism' means, no consensus."
The tribunal's origins "are political, a check on Hezbollah, and this plays out badly in the popular mind in Lebanon since so many worse atrocities are ignored," says a prominent American war crimes scholar close to The Hague who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another flaw, he notes, are plans to try the accused in absentia. Defendants won't be in court. "No one in a tribunal has been tried in absentia since Nuremberg, and this is acknowledged as the major flaw in that court."
Another sore subject is the tribunal's interaction, or lack of it, with civil society in Lebanon. It has been distant and aloof. Witnesses have recanted and judges have resigned without explanation...
The tribunal seemed "snakebitten from the start," says the American jurist. Initially, a German judge, Detlev Mehlis, led a 2005 commission looking into the assassination. It reported charges based on one witness that led to the arrest of four Lebanese generals. The report now reads like a Hollywood script. The witness was a con and the generals were released after sitting in jail even after the fraud was exposed.
Following this gaffe, the UN Security Council established a tribunal at The Hague in 2007. But as Mr. Beauchard puts it, the new body seemed oblivious to the need to establish legitimacy in Lebanon. "There's been a bunker mentality with this tribunal from the start," he says. "The communication with Lebanese civil society is almost nonexistent. So many opportunities were wasted."
Mark Ellis, director of the International Bar Association in London, says that while bedrock principles of international justice need support, "this [Lebanon tribunal] mechanism and the way it was used, that is not black and white. If it is hundreds of thousands killed, that's not a nuanced conversation. But this tribunal came from a very unorthodox process. It doesn't mirror any other tribunal out there. It came from a doubt that any accountability in Lebanon itself was possible. So it was an experiment; I hope it succeeds. But you commit an international justice concept to crimes of lesser degree, and that is a risk."
In Lebanon, support for or against the tribunal falls along political and sectarian lines, but there have been significant defections..."

The Division of Egypt: Threats of US, Israeli, and NATO Military Intervention? [Voltaire]: "The Division of Egypt: Threats of US, Israeli, and NATO Military Intervention?
by Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya*"
Egypt was once a major strategic challenge to the U.S., Israel, France, and Britain in the Arab World and Africa. Nasserite Egypt aided the Algerian Resistance against the French occupation of Algeria, openly supported the Palestinians against the Israeli occupation of their homes, supported the Yemenite Resistance against the British occupation in South Yemen, challenged the legitimacy of the British-installed Hashemites and the American-supported House of Saud, and offered support to national liberation and anti-imperialist movements. Cairo under a revolutionary government, whether deeply tied to Islam or not, could give the Arab World a new leader that would revive pan-Arabism, make Tel Aviv further nervous about trying to launch wars, and rally the Arabs and other peoples worldwide in revolt against the global confederacy formed by the U.S. and its allies.

Egypt is not free from bondage yet. The Egyptian people must also address the role of global capitalism in supporting the Mubarak regime. At the same time they must remain united. If they are successful, they will make a huge impact on the history of the current century.

In post-Mubarak Egypt, the rebirth of the Arab world

In post-Mubarak Egypt, the rebirth of the Arab world: "In post-Mubarak Egypt, the rebirth of the Arab world"

Arab regimes have no clear and effective approach toward any of the issues vital to their collective future,

the Arab world has had virtually no impact on Iraq's course. It has done little to achieve Palestinian aspirations besides backing a peace process in which it no longer believes. When Israel went to war with Hezbollah in 2006 and then with Hamas two years later, most Arab leaders privately cheered the Jewish state.

Arab states suffer from a curse more debilitating than poverty or autocracy. They have become counterfeit, perceived by their own people as alien, pursuing policies hatched from afar.
Popular uprisings are the latest step in this process. They have been facilitated by a newfound fearlessness and feeling of empowerment - watching the U.S. military's struggles in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Israel's inability to subdue Hezbollah and Hamas, Arab peoples are no longer afraid to confront their own regimes.
The more the United States gave to the Mubarak regime, the more it lost Egypt. Arab leaders have been put on notice: A warm relationship with the United States and a peace deal with Israel will not save you in your hour of need.
For decades, the Arab world has been drained of its sovereignty, its freedom, its pride. It has been drained of politics. Today marks politics' revenge.

A Guide to Reading the Egyptian Uprising in its first week
1) Nothing you see now will stay.
2) Struggle between different forces and powers will take months and years to be resolved (it took Nasser until 1954 to control the scene in Cairo after the Revolution.
3) The names you hear now may not be heard from again, and there will be new names that you have not heard of before.
4) Some figures from the "ancien regime" will rear their faces and even prosper in the new regime.
5) Egypt has changed no matter what will happen. Fear is gone and control of state is loosened.
6) There will be violence: it is unlikely with 300 dead and 2000 injured that there won't be revenge and assassinations.
7) Expect Mubrak-leaks: new documents will be leaked that will be embarrassing and damning (a document has been released by an Egyptian newspaper showing a horrible diplomatic order by the lousy Mubarak's foreign minister, Ahmad Abu Al-Ghayt.
8) Enemies of the US/Israel in the country and in the region will have an advantage inside the country--politically and intelligence wise
9) There will be new political parties and groups and old ones will wither away
10) Mubarak can't stay in the country. He said that he wants to die on Egyptian soil. He very well may--but not a natural death.
11) The media will change: the courageous journalists (a small number) of the previous era will be the new media star (`Abdul-Halim Qandil and Hamdi Qandil (no relation) and Ibrahim `Isa).
12) The Muslim Brotherhood will be courted by Iran, Turkey, and...US (not to mention Saudi Arabia which will only court them to appease the US although Saudi Arabia may be tempted to subvert the democratic system by supporting the Brothers to spite the US. Saudi anger at US is intense.
13) The role of the middle classes will recede on the streets, and that of peasants and workers will rise.
14) The vulgar singer, Sha`ban `Abdul-Rahim who sang for Husni Mubarak will come out with songs against him.

The Angry Arab News Service/وكالة أنباء العربي الغاضب: Why this Obama administration is destined to make a fateful mistake in its Middle East policies: "Why this Obama administration is destined to make a fateful mistake in its Middle East policies"
Up to the Carter administration, there were Middle East experts in government who could weigh in with their assessment of US interests in the Middle East, free of the considerations of what is good for Israel and its wars and massacres. It is fair to say that this is one of the most major challenges for the US in the region since WWII but there is not a single Middle East expert in the government who can give an assessment of US interests without being obsessed with "what is good for Israel" here. This is why the Israeli calculations are dominating the crisis decision-making at the White House, and the tone and substance of rhetoric. I mean, with people like Feltman and Shapiro (one at State and another at NSC--and both are Zionist fanatics), there is no Richard Parker or Richard Murphy or William Quandt or Gary Sick to offer an assessment of what is at stake for the US in this crisis. This is why the Obama ministration is following the script of Israeli best wishes--which could prove soon to be disastrous for the US. I remember on Sep. 11, I kept thinking without any realization about James Forrestal. I kept thinking of his warnings back in 1948. So there is not a single expert around Obama who can dare to offer an evaluation of the situation from outside the Zionist framework. Not one. You can argue that the Zionist lobby's biggest success since Reagan administration is to monopolize all appointments on the Middle East in the two main branches of government. But Israel's best wishes could be horrific for the US.

There are many ways to take the life of a human being. There’s the Mubarak way: allow corrupt police officers to smash an innocent young man’s skull in broad daylight in front of witnesses, then let those officers go with little more than a slap on the wrist. There’s the Ben Ali way: over a lifetime deprive him of his dignity and means of supporting his family until he snaps and, out of sheer desperation, takes his own life. Then there’s the Gaddafi way: hang the young men in public, replay the execution on television over and over again, leave some of their bodies dangling from the gallows for days, and drag the rest through the streets for all to see and take heed,

Hizbullah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah declared support to the Egyptian and Tunisian people, who rose against their corrupt governments and started revolutions against their regimes. His Eminence announced solidarity with the Egyptian people, noting that one face of solidarity with this revolution is to defend it and reveal its true image.

His Eminence considered that topping the list of solidarity with this revolution is to refute all the alleged claims against this revolution. He noted that the worst false accusation presented by some in the Arab world is claiming this revolution is a US intelligence product.

The hypothesis of Arab stupidity is the same, as it was during British and French colonialism. Hillary Clinton speaks about the importance of “reform” as if we don’t know the implications of this hideous word. Didn’t the Bush and Obama administrations praise the Saudi government for its “reform”? Code words are used in American discourse towards Arabs: Democracy scares the American and Israeli colonizers. Obama spoke in the first days about the importance of change, but has yet to utter “free elections.”

It comes across almost casually as Robert Springborg, professor of national security affairs at the US Naval Postgraduate School, tells Reuters, "The military will engineer a succession. The West - the US and the EU [European Union] - are working to that end. We are working closely with the military ... to ensure a continuation of a dominant role of the military in the society, the polity and the economy."
the street also knows that a truly representative, sovereign Egyptian government cripples the entire US-controlled Middle East power arrangement.

"Eyewitnesses said that unknown* armed groups fired rocket propelled grenades on Friday on the state security office in Arish, in North Sinai, setting the building on fire. According to eyewitnesses, the state security building that was under attack was opened only five months ago. The building is adjacent to police headquarters and the governorate's offices, which are also in danger of catching fire if the flames are not contained. The old state security building in the heart of Arish was destroyed and burned during last Friday's protest." You need to look at Arish on the map to understand. The State Security building is basically in charge of protecting Israel and tightening the siege of Gaza.

Where do I begin on this piece? What do you expect from a piece that treated Bruce Ridel as an expert of the Muslim Brotherhood. Look how the aspirations and wishes and hopes of 330 million Arabs are discarded in order to make rooms for Israeli war crimes and occupation: "Mr. Hamid said the Muslim Brotherhood’s deep hostility to Israel — which reflects majority public opinion in Egypt — would pose difficulties for American policy." That is all that you care about, even if this is about the repression of 80 million Egyptians. It is all about keeping the lousy ugly flag of Israeli occupying flying in Cairo. But no, as obnoxious as that sentence was, I love this sentence in the article: "Its conservative views on the rights of women and intolerance of religious minorities are offensive by Western standards." Oh, really? Conservative views on women and minorities are "offensive by Western standards"? How cute. But the conservative religious views on women and minorities in Israel does not seem to offend Western standards. Furthermore, how come the most extreme conservative--far more than the Muslim Brotherhood's--views AND practices against women and minorities in Saudi Arabia never seem to offend Western standards. In this sentence you learn that attacks on US occupation troops in Iraq is considered terrorism, so the definition of terrorism has now been adjusted to delegitimize acts of resistance against US and Israeli occupation troops: "its leaders have endorsed acts of terrorism against Israel and against American troops in Iraq."
