translation of Hans Fallada’s 1947 novel, is far less piquant than the
German original. “Everyone dies for himself alone” (Jeder stirbt für sich allein)
conveys that it is dying, much more than being alone, that is at the
heart of this book. Fallada, who never escaped official suspicion after
his most popular novel, Little Man, What Now (1932), was
banned, had ample grounds for fearing death himself. In and out of
insane asylums for the last years of his life (he died in 1947, shortly
after completing Alone in Berlin), he knew the fragility of existence under fascism intimately.

Jeder stirbt für sich allein by Hans Fallada was published in Germany in 1947 and finally got translated into English as Alone in Berlin in the UK and as Every Man Dies Alone in
the US in 2009. It is the story, closely based on real events, of an
ordinary German couple and their acts of resistance against the Nazis.

The folks who made this film are quite obviously very aware of circumstances happening today. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF!. Non conformism, disloyalty, and resistance to authoritarianism are dangerous yet absolutely necessary . Risking one's life in these dangerous times is a moral imperative. ***Another striking point about German society at that time is the dominance of fear. Not only the obvious fear from the Gestapo and the SS, but also fear of being reported to the authorities by neighbours, co-workers and even members of the own family. The whole country is under a cloud of fear and mistrust. *** The Skinnerian behaviourism THEN AND NOW is simple, you are rewarded with life, or, you are punished with death. ( sentenced to death and executed via a constellation of high tech weapons) This is the glue holding America together today. The privileged classes will do ANYTHING to maintain their superior positions in life.

No ideologue here. Beyrle is balanced, objective, and realistic in his approach. He is no Putin apologist either. My take is, he is old money ( ***his group-think or institutional blindness is still very much on display***). Beyrle is the last of a dieing breed who has been driven out (via Machiavellian intrigues) by new money. ( ***the profoundly ignorant and arrogant commentators we see in much Western mainstream media*** ). New money, being rapacious ideologues, are NOT ignorant themselves. They know their target audience, the street (their demographic), to be dangerously stupid (or easily lead, depending on which side of the coin the situation is viewed) and they pander, correspondingly, to this stupidity. They do it far more effectively then old money ever did. Maybe because new money has closer histories to the street. And maybe because old money can no longer defend itself against the relentless onslaught of new money's Skinnerian engineered efficient street. Beyrle is the last of his kind, old money. New money has mercilessly taken control of social, political, and economical spheres and old money must submit to them. The Machiavellian aspect! We mourn the loss of this older and wiser breed.

Insofar as the American Academy of Motion Picture
