Friends Fiduciary Corporation, the socially responsible investment firm serving over 300 Quaker institutions in the United States, has dropped its holdings in Hewlett Packard and Veolia Environment, multinational corporations that support Israel’s Occupation of the Palestinian Territories.


Hewlett Packard was removed from Friends Fiduciary’s investments because they provide information technology consulting services to the Israeli Navy, said Jeffery W. Perkins, the Executive Director of Friends Fiduciary. Veolia Environment, the world’s largest water privatization company, was removed because of “environmental and social concerns.” According to Global Exchange, Veolia provides segregated water services to Israeli settlers in the Palestinian Territories and runs a large landfill in the occupied Jordan River valley.

Friends’ Fiduciary’s decision to drop Hewlett Packard and Veolia follows on the heels of another important action, says Anne Remley of the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting, which initiated the divestment requests. In April, 2012, Friends Fiduciary’s removed Caterpillar Corporation from their list of socially responsible corporations based on the 360-year old Quaker Peace Testimony, which disavows support for war.

Friends were concerned that Caterpillar sells bulldozers to the Israeli army to be weaponized and used in the systematic demolition of Palestinian homes and civilian infrastructure. When this concern was brought to Friends Fiduciary, says Perkins, [Caterpillar] “would neither confirm nor deny the extent or type of modifications to the equipment sold to the Israeli military.”

The action of Friends Fiduciary in dropping these three firms marks a major breakthrough in the global campaign to hold corporations accountable for profiting from Israel’s human rights and international law violations in the Palestinian Territories.

He said that Egypt had "unfortunately been absent from Arab work for a while."
"We return from this marginalization, where we have lived in recent decades, back to Egypt's natural historic role," Mursi said.

There was a group of young people marching while waving several flags of the state, others with the Star of David in rainbow colours and one in PINK with a drag queen in tow! The people there were handing out flyers, buttons and small flags. I was so pissed of I did not take one of the flyers with me, but I did see the title as "Israels Stellung zur Homosexualität" (Israel's Position in Homosexuality) Pun anyone? I am not sure if the public was even aware of the politics behind it all, still they were snapping up the mini-flags like crazy. Back home I started looking online and it turns out that this part of the parade was sponsored by the Israeli Embassy / Consulate itself and

The relative costs in that protracted war of attrition will fall disproportionately most heavily on the US, and will result in uncontrollable domestic revolt against the DC Regime as it will become known, and the US will have to put feelers out to Lavrov and Putin, who are gracious men, and will not take advantage of the humiliation the DC Regime will be feeling, and will allow the US a face saving disengagement.



The conglomerates in DC which constitute the planners and decision makers are also thinking in these terms, and in their joint councils, which will include State and the Office of the President, the prevailing opinion will emerge that there are limits to raw American power, and that an accommodation will be made with Syria and Iran before ominous counter measures are taken, all of which will then be patiently explained to Israel.

Education and access to education are now our fundamental class delineators. Higher education is now for the privileged.


Most educated American liberals, however, believe simply being progressive makes them, by default, the nation's saviors -- morally and intellectually right in all things. As proof, they read more and, allegedly, are more open minded than most conservatives, except when it comes to their daughter dating a redneck named Ernest who lives in a trailer court behind the strip mall. They are certainly among the educated class in a country known for its lousy schools and a dull, sated and unquestioning public.

Shortly after Joe's death, I stumbled upon this piece. I hold it dear to this day. It needs to be shared.
Class delineation is important in trying to understand "things".
Not being "well" educated myself, my inability to articulate, is extremely frustrating. The above excerpt rings true for me.The educated, no matter what their socio economic station, at least have the tools for survival. Alas, fools like me who have an inferior education are nothing more then the "redneck named Earnest who lives in a trailer court behind the strip mall".
Joe Bageant died of cancer. My best guess is he rocked the boat, he did not tow the line and was thusly, terminated.

"...Egyptian nerves are frayed, and not just because of a lingering post-Mubarak transition. There are other examples of insecurity, all from the past week. An HSBC bank was robbed by armed men in broad daylight in a Cairo suburb, while on the same day an armoured truck carrying large amounts of cash was hijacked. A group of Chinese workers from an army cement plant in central Sinai were kidnapped for ransom by Bedouins (they were released after a few days)....
Egyptians can't take much more of this. This is a country where 40 per cent live near the poverty line, where business has taken a massive hit since last year's uprising and whose state coffers are emptying fast. Amid lingering uncertainty about its political future - the street, parliament and army continue to be locked in a heated debate ...
To add to the general confusion, many Egyptians will tell you that this insecurity is planned. The Muslim Brotherhood blamed the stadium disaster on "remnants of the former regime" - a common shorthand for the deep state and former high-level officials - who want to destabilise the political transition and the ascendancy of Islamists.
Many among young revolutionaries believe the military itself is manipulating public opinion with this violence, to get a better bargaining position as it negotiates its exit from power. A common conspiracy theory is that military and the security service officials are behind the chaos, which they hope will help them to avoid being prosecuted for crimes committed before and since the uprising. Indeed, while the army has declared three days of mourning for the victims, the anti-military protest movement is planning a series of marches and protests against the government and the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
It is not only political radicals who hold this view. The morning after the football disaster yesterday, a very staid Egyptian investment banker told me he thought the security services were behind it, as intelligence services had warned that "a group of thugs" were heading to Port Said with the intention of disrupting the game, yet security had been suspiciously lax - as videos of riot police standing still as the crowds erupted onto the pitch show. A common view is that the police wanted to punish football fans such as the Ultras, who made a name for themselves during the occupation of Tahrir Square last year for their fearless battles with police and pro-Mubarak thugs.
Are these conspiracies within the realm of possibility? Perhaps - security at the stadium was certainly extremely lax despite warnings.
But the unproven speculation is distracting from the reality that Egypt needs an operational, authoritative (but not authoritarian) police force, as any state does. The question of police reform, and the rebuilding of its self-confidence, has yet to be tackled seriously, with the past year wasted on superficial changes. The new parliament needs to work with the government so that civilians finally get an understanding of what is behind all this violence - the old regime "remnants", "foreign hands" or perhaps more simply a state and a society that still has to forge a new, hopefully more humane, relationship."

'Anonymous' on a rampage: 'Haditha Massacre' files leaked!

"Anonymous is on a rampage today. Just hours after leaking a confidential phone call between the FBI and Scotland yard, members have released a huge archive of emails and documents related to the 2005 Haditha Massacre, which left 24 Iraqi civilians dead.
Just a few minutes ago, Anonymous announced they had stolen 2.6 gigabytes of email belonging to the law firm Puckett Faraj. Neal Puckett represents Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, who was accused of leading the group of Marines who killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha in November, 2005—what later became known as the Haditha Massacre. Last month, Wuterich struck a plea deal where he'll be demoted from Staff Sergeant to Private, but will serve no prison time.
Anonymous promises the emails contain "detailed records, transcripts, testimony, trial evidence, and legal defense donation records" about the Haditha case, and other cases Puckett Faraj handles.
To announce the hack, Anonymous defaced the website of Pucket Farai with this message:

"As part of our ongoing efforts to expose the corruption of the court systems and the brutality of US imperialism, we want to bring attention to USMC SSgt Frank Wuterich who along with his squad murdered dozens of unarmed civilians during the Iraqi Occupation. Can you believe this scumbag had his charges reduced to involuntary manslaughter and got away with only a pay cut?"

The emails should be posted to the Pirate Bay soon. Judging by our quick glance of an advanced archive posted to a website on the TOR anonymizing network, they definitely stole emails from Pucket Faraj..."

It's not that there is more freedom of speech in Britain than the US, just that some types have differing degrees of appeal in each country.

WASHINGTON — An Air Force investigation into a shooting spree by an Afghan colonel that left nine U.S. military trainers dead last year found high levels of hostility between Afghan and American forces and major Afghan support for the shooter.
The report released Tuesday by the Pentagon revealed that the Afghan colonel — who methodically opened fire in a conference room at a highly secured Afghan air base in April — told friends that he had returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan "to kill Americans."
Col. Ahmed Gul shot all but one of the Americans in the head, and all at least twice, in what remains the war's deadliest shooting incident targeting Americans. Far from making him a pariah, more than 1,500 Afghans attended Gul's funeral, Air Force investigators reported.

A Lebanese man identified as Elias Younes —who is a retired employee at the Ogero telecommunications company—was arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Israel, Al-Manar television reported on Wednesday.

The Lebanese army intelligence arrested the man who was labeled by the Zionist top intelligence officers as “the dean of collaborators” for having dealt with Israel “for over 35 years,” starting from 1977.

“[Younes] supplied the enemy with details regarding marine security procedures and ships movement, in addition to information related to the Telecommunications Ministry, as well as the detailed scheme of communication network in Lebanon.” Al-Manar added.
